What Does Adblue Do for Diesel Cars?

If you own or drive a newer diesel car or vehicle you probably already use a special formula that may be required for you to drive. Diesel engine technology has been regulated in order to provide cleaner exhaust and better protect the environment. So, what does AdBlue do for diesel cars and how does it work?

Due to the overwhelming amount of carbon and nitrogen oxide in the environment, many countries have regulated diesel engine manufacturing to reduce nitrogen oxide and other environmentally damaging emissions. Due to the high cost of retooling and changing the mechanical aspects of the engines, manufacturers have put thought and investment into other technologically advanced systems in order to comply with the newer regulations.

One of the ways the manufacturers reduce dangerous emissions is through a chemical reaction. The solution is injected into the exhaust system where the formula is heated and turned into ammonia. This then reacts with the nitrogen oxide which is reduced to harmless nitrogen and oxygen. The oxygen and nitrogen are then released through the exhaust system safely into the environment.

In order for the formula to work, it is kept in a separate tank from the diesel fuel and is not a fuel additive. The system injects a tiny bit into the exhaust catalyst, called the Selective Catalyst Reduction system. This small amount then mixes with the nitrogen oxide to change it to the safer gases.

Most newer diesel cars require the formula in order to work properly. The tanks are located in different places. Some may require a top-up at a dealership while others are easily located for the common driver to maintain the appropriate level. Your vehicle user manual should tell you if your car requires it to run. If you are unsure, take the time to look up your vehicle model or ask your dealer to be sure.

If you happen to run out, your vehicle should continue to run while you are driving. However, the system is usually designed to adjust vehicle performance to reduce emissions. This may cause your car or truck to slow down. If this is the case, you will need to get a top up at a dealer or do it yourself in order to return to previous performance. Most cars will warn you that the fluid is low well before you run out. In some cases, you may not be able to start your car until a minimum amount of the fluid is added to the appropriate tank.

When you refill the fluid be sure to pour it into the correct tank. This is not a fuel additive. It is designed to work with the exhaust system, not through the fuel injection. A minimum amount is usually needed in order for the vehicle to start and run properly. If you’re not sure where or how to fill the proper tank, a mechanic or dealer can assist.
